The ordinary route: five years of residence
On the ordinary route, you can apply for Turkish citizenship after five years of legal and continuous residence in Türkiye. Continuous matters: across those five years, your total time outside Türkiye should not exceed about twelve months. Other conditions apply as well, such as having no criminal record and some knowledge of Turkish.
Which residence counts
Not every residence type counts the same. Work, property and family residence usually count in full. Student residence does not always count in full, so if citizenship is your goal, it is worth planning when to move from student residence to another type.
Citizenship by investment
The faster route is citizenship through investment: at least USD 400,000 invested in property, or USD 500,000 in fixed capital. It is a separate process from residence by property (which needs a residential property worth at least USD 200,000) and has its own conditions.
Planning your route
- Choose a residence type that counts in full from the start, if you can.
- Keep every renewal on time: a gap in legal residence can break the five-year count.
- Watch your time abroad across the whole five years, not just in one year.
- If you hold a work permit through your own company, don't close the company before your next residence is in place.
