Student residence in Türkiye (öğrenci ikamet izni): how it works and what it costs

For many people, student residence is the simplest and least expensive way to live in Türkiye legally. It is tied to studying at a Turkish university, so the order is always the same: admission, registration, then residence.

At a glance

  • When: only after you have registered at the university.
  • Cost with ATIELIT: free when you register through us; government fees, insurance and the residence card are paid by you.
  • No monthly social-security premium is needed, unlike the work-permit route.
  • Work: bachelor's and associate students can work up to 24 hours a week after their first year, with a work permit.
  • Later: switching to a work permit is possible in some cases.

Admission first, residence second

Student residence is always applied for after university registration. That is why we start with choosing the programme and the university and getting your admission; our admission service is free. If you don't have a language certificate, the university gives you a one-year language preparatory programme first, and there is no general age limit for a bachelor's degree.

What it costs

If you register through ATIELIT, we file your student residence application for free. What you pay are the costs that go to others: the government fees, health insurance and the residence card. Unlike a work permit through your own company, there is no monthly social-security premium, which is a big part of why this route is the cheapest.

Documents

  • A valid passport, photos and an address in Türkiye.
  • Your university admission and proof of registration.
  • Your school or university certificates, officially translated and certified. We arrange this for you.
  • Valid health insurance.

Working while you study

Students can work with a work permit, which the employer applies for. Bachelor's and associate students can work up to 24 hours a week after their first year (more in the summer holidays); master's and PhD students can get a permit from the start. Working without a permit can damage your residence.

After graduation, and citizenship

Depending on your degree, your situation and the rules at the time, switching from student residence to a work permit is possible in some cases. If you are aiming for citizenship, keep in mind that student residence does not always count in full towards the five years, while work, property and family residence usually do.
